Who Are Young Carers?
Young carers are children and young people who provide care or support to a family member or friend who may have an illness, disability, mental health condition, or face challenges with addiction. Their responsibilities can vary widely, from helping with household tasks to providing emotional or physical care.
Support at Brynmawr Foundation School
At Brynmawr Foundation School, we are committed to supporting young carers by:
- Maintaining a visible and proactive approach to identifying and supporting young carers.
- Creating a supportive school environment where students feel comfortable sharing their caring responsibilities.
- Establishing clear systems for reporting and addressing concerns.
- Encouraging the development of peer support networks.
- Providing opportunities and experiences specifically designed for young carers.
- Offering flexibility and understanding to help balance their caring roles with school life.
- Signposting families to relevant support services.
How Parents Can Help
As a parent, you can support a young carer by:
- Encouraging open conversations about their experiences and feelings.
- Working with the school to ensure they receive appropriate support.
- Seeking help from charities and local services that specialize in supporting young carers.
