  • National Tests: Personalised Assessments (KS3)

Each term, all pupils in Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 will sit their Welsh Government National Tests. These tests are completed online via Hwb.

Pupils should bring their own wired headphones if possible. They may purchase a pair from Pupil Services for £1, which can be kept for all future online assessments. A limited number of headphones will also be available to borrow.

There are three National Tests completed throughout the year:

    • National Reading Test - completed twice a year (Autumn Term and Summer Term). Parent/carer feedback is available via Hwb
    • National Numeracy (Procedural) Test - completed twice a year (Autumn Term and Summer Term). Parent/carer feedback is available via Hwb.
    • National Numeracy (Reasoning) Test - completed once a year in the Spring Term. Parent/carer feedback is not available for this test.

All pupils in Wales complete these tests every year from Year 2 to Year 9, so pupils are familiar with the format and expectations.

The best way to support your child is to log into their Hwb account, click on Personalised Assessments, and explore the familiarisation materials together (see picture below). Maths and English teachers will also review strategies and sample questions during lessons in the week before testing.

Reports for the Numeracy Procedural and Reading Tests will be shared with pupils and parents via the Hwb website following the tests. Due to the nature of the Numeracy Reasoning Test, Hwb does not provide personalised feedback for this assessment. Parents/carers will be notified when Personalised Assessment reports are available to view.

Below, you will find a learner checklist to review with your Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 children, along with a Welsh Government video introducing the National Tests.
