  • Additional Learning Needs

Brynmawr Foundation School is a fully inclusive school that caters to a diverse range of learning needs, from specific and moderate needs to more complex learning difficulties.

We are committed to providing an outstanding educational experience for every pupil, offering opportunities for a positive, happy, and successful journey through school. Our caring and welcoming nature maintains exceptionally high expectations for all students, supporting them to grow, flourish, and achieve in a safe and nurturing environment. We offer a wide range of bespoke learning programmes to meet the specific educational and medical needs of our learners.

At the heart of our ethos is the belief that pupils should remain at the centre of every decision we make. Our aim is to provide a fully inclusive education that ensures every learner can reach their full potential.

Our approach to Additional Learning Needs (ALN), guided by the ALNET Act 2018 and the Code of Practice (2021), is rooted in the principle of inclusive education. Meeting the needs of learners with ALN is embedded across the whole school and forms an integral part of our policies, ensuring that all students receive the support they require to thrive academically, socially, and personally.

    Support at Brynmawr Foundation School

At Brynmawr Foundation school, the needs of all students are supported through universal provision, which includes high-quality teaching, tailored learning strategies, and a range of academic and wellbeing interventions.

For a small number of learners, targeted support is provided when an Additional Learning Need is identified. These pupils have a Pupil Passport outlining specific targets and may receive additional support from external agencies. Their needs are carefully recorded and addressed and pupils will receive personalised support.

For learners with more complex Additional Learning Needs, a specialist provision is put in place. In these cases, support may involve the Local Authority and multi-agency teams to ensure that the IDP is fully resourced and tailored to meet the learner’s individual requirements.

    Targeted Support and Intervention

At our school, we are committed to ensuring every pupil has the opportunity to succeed. To support this, we offer targeted intervention programmes in Wellbeing, Literacy, and Numeracy, designed to meet individual learning needs and help every student thrive.

Wellbeing: We provide a range of support to promote positive mental health and emotional resilience. This includes access to wellbeing groups, mentoring, and specialist support, creating a safe and nurturing environment where students feel confident to seek help and develop life skills.

Literacy: Our literacy interventions focus on strengthening reading, writing, and comprehension skills. Tailored support is provided both within the classroom and through dedicated sessions, ensuring pupils build the confidence and competence to reach their full potential.

Numeracy: Numeracy interventions are designed to reinforce understanding, develop problem-solving skills, and build confidence in mathematical concepts. Small-group and one-to-one support ensure that pupils receive personalised guidance to progress at their own pace.

Through these structured programmes, combined with our inclusive classroom practice, we ensure that all students receive the right support at the right time, enabling them to achieve academic success while developing personally and socially.
